How to Check UAE Visa Status with Passport Number

Checking UAE visa status with a passport number is useful when a resident, visitor, employee, investor or family sponsor wants to confirm whether a visa or residence permit is valid, issued, expired, cancelled or still under process. But the phrase "check visa status with passport number" can be misleading, because not every UAE status check uses only a passport number, and not every visa file belongs to the same authority.

The official UAE Government visa tracking page separates the route by emirate. For visas issued by Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, users are directed to ICP. For Dubai visas, users are directed to GDRFA Dubai. This is the first rule to understand before entering any passport details.

If the wrong authority is used, the status may not show. That does not always mean the visa is invalid. It may simply mean the file is being checked in the wrong place.

Quick Answer

To check UAE visa status, first identify the issuing emirate. If the visa or residence was issued in Dubai, use GDRFA Dubai’s visa status route. If it was issued in another emirate, use ICP channels. Passport number may be required, but some forms also ask for file number, permit number, nationality, date of birth, UID or application reference. Use the exact details from the visa copy, entry permit, residence record or application receipt.

Before You Start: Identify the File

Before checking status, answer four questions:

  1. Was the visa issued in Dubai or another emirate?
  2. Is this an entry permit, residence visa, visit visa, cancellation, renewal or overstay check?
  3. Do you have the passport used in the application?
  4. Do you have the file number, UID, permit number or application receipt?

Many failed searches happen because users only know one detail: the passport number. In practice, the status tool may need more than that. The file number or permit number can be more useful than the passport number alone.

Dubai Visa Status: GDRFA Dubai

If the visa is issued in Dubai, GDRFA Dubai is the normal route for visa status checks. GDRFA Dubai’s Visa Status service is described as a way to verify entry/residence permits, establishment cards and more.

Depending on the form and case, the user may need:

  • Passport number.
  • Nationality.
  • Date of birth.
  • File number.
  • Entry permit number.
  • Residence number.
  • Application number.

The exact fields may change, so follow the official GDRFA inquiry form. If the user does not know whether the file is Dubai-issued, check the visa copy or ask the sponsor, employer, free zone, typing centre or PRO.

Non-Dubai Visa Status: ICP

For visas and residence files issued outside Dubai, ICP is usually the correct route. The UAE Government visa tracking page directs users to ICP for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah visa validity.

ICP smart services and the UAEICP app may support visa, residence and application inquiries. The user should be ready with passport details, file number, UID or application number depending on the service.

For residents outside Dubai, ICP may also be connected to residence permit issuance and Emirates ID, but the user should still distinguish visa status from Emirates ID status.

Passport Number vs File Number

A passport number identifies the travel document. A visa file number identifies the immigration file. They are connected, but they are not the same.

If a person renews their passport, the old passport number may still appear in older records unless updated. If the status check uses the new passport number but the visa was issued under the old passport, the result may not appear. In that case, check the visa copy and old passport details.

File number is often more reliable for residence status because it points directly to the immigration record. Keep a copy of the visa page, entry permit and application receipt so the file number is not lost.

Entry Permit vs Residence Visa

An entry permit is not the same as a residence visa. A person may have an entry permit to enter or complete residence procedures. Later, the residence permit may be issued. If the person checks the wrong document type, the status may seem confusing.

For example, an employee may have an entry permit issued, medical fitness completed and residence processing pending. The entry permit may show one status, while residence issuance is still not complete. A founder may complete status change but still wait for residence approval.

Ask which document is being checked: entry permit, residence visa or Emirates ID.

Residence Visa vs Emirates ID Status

A residence visa status check does not prove that Emirates ID is issued. For Emirates ID, use ICP ID Card Status and the relevant PRAN, IDN or request number. This matters because many services, especially banks and telecom providers, ask for Emirates ID even when residence status is already valid.

If the visa is valid but the Emirates ID is delayed, the next check is ICP Emirates ID status, not another visa status search.

Medical Fitness and Visa Status

For many residence processes, medical fitness is required for applicants aged 18 and above. The UAE Government residence visa page states that residence visa applicants who are 18 and above must undergo a medical test to prove they are medically fit.

In Dubai, Dubai Health provides a medical fitness exam status service. If medical fitness is pending, a visa status check may not show the final residence result yet. The visa is not necessarily rejected; the file may simply be waiting for the health step.

Common Reasons Status Does Not Show

Status may not appear because:

  • The wrong authority is being used.
  • The file is Dubai-issued but checked through ICP, or vice versa.
  • The wrong passport number is entered.
  • The passport was renewed after the visa was issued.
  • The file number is missing or incorrect.
  • The application was submitted recently.
  • Medical fitness is pending.
  • Status change is pending.
  • The visa was cancelled.
  • The sponsor, employer or free zone has the correct receipt but the applicant does not.

Before assuming the visa is invalid, verify the data and route.

What Employers Should Track

Employers should not rely only on employee passport numbers. HR should maintain full visa records:

  • Passport number and expiry.
  • UID number.
  • Visa file number.
  • Entry permit number.
  • Medical fitness application status.
  • Residence issue date.
  • Residence expiry date.
  • Emirates ID number and expiry.
  • Cancellation date if applicable.

This helps HR answer employee questions and prevents lost status references during renewal or cancellation.

What Founders Should Track

Company founders should track their own investor visa status closely because it affects Emirates ID, UAE Pass, corporate banking, family sponsorship and local administration. A company licence alone does not mean the founder’s residence process is complete.

Founders should keep:

  • Trade licence.
  • Establishment or immigration file evidence where applicable.
  • Entry permit/status change receipt.
  • Medical fitness result.
  • Residence approval or visa copy.
  • Emirates ID application receipt.
  • Emirates ID digital or physical copy.

These documents form the founder’s UAE operating pack.

Status Check by Situation

If you are outside the UAE and checking an entry permit, use the permit details and issuing authority. Do not confuse entry permit validity with residence validity.

If you are inside the UAE after status change, check whether the residence process has moved beyond the entry permit stage. Status change can be a bridge step, not the final residence output.

If you are renewing residence, check whether the old visa is still active, whether renewal has been submitted and whether medical fitness or Emirates ID renewal is pending.

If you are checking a cancelled visa, look for cancellation confirmation and grace-period implications. A cancellation status may not answer overstay fine questions by itself.

If you are checking for a family member, use that family member’s passport and file details, not the sponsor’s details unless the form specifically asks for sponsor information.

If you are checking an employee file, ask HR whether the application is under entry permit, medical fitness, residence issuance, Emirates ID or cancellation. "Visa under process" is too vague.

How to Read a Visa Copy Before Checking Status

The visa or residence copy usually contains clues. Look for issuing emirate, file number, UID, passport number, issue date, expiry date, sponsor and permit type. These details tell you which authority and which number to use.

If the visa copy is not available, ask the sponsor, employer, free zone, Amer centre, typing centre or PRO. Do not rely only on memory. A single wrong digit can make the status search fail.

If the passport was renewed, compare the old and new passport. The status may still be tied to the passport number used when the visa was issued.

Visa Status and Grace Period

Visa status checking is often urgent after expiry or cancellation. A valid residence, expired residence and cancelled residence are different situations. Grace-period rules can vary by category and can change, so the official authority or service provider should confirm the current position.

For a business owner, this matters because an expired or cancelled residence can affect Emirates ID, bank KYC, family sponsorship and ability to remain in the UAE legally. For an employee, it affects employment transition and new visa processing.

Do not use a generic online article as the final basis for stay decisions. Use the official status and current authority guidance.

Data Quality Checklist

Before repeating a failed status search, check:

  • Passport number.
  • Old passport number if renewed.
  • Nationality.
  • Date of birth.
  • File number.
  • UID number.
  • Entry permit number.
  • Issuing emirate.
  • Visa type.
  • Sponsor name.

If any of these are uncertain, the issue may be data quality, not visa validity.

When Passport Number Alone Is Not Enough

Many users search for a passport-number-only method because they do not have the file number. That can work in some checks, but it is not a reliable strategy for every case. A passport can be renewed, entered incorrectly, or linked to several historical records. A file number or application number is usually stronger.

If you do not have the file number, ask the sponsor, employer, free zone, travel agent, Amer centre, typing centre or PRO. If they submitted the application, they should have the receipt. For residents, check old visa copies and passport pages. For employees, HR should maintain the file reference.

Do not keep retrying random combinations. That increases confusion and may lead to wrong conclusions.

Checking Status Before Travel

Visa status checks become especially important before travel. A resident should confirm that residence is valid, passport is valid, and any re-entry or outside-country issue is understood. A visitor should confirm entry permit validity before travel. A cancelled or expired status may have consequences.

For company founders, travel timing can affect medical fitness, biometrics, Emirates ID and bank account opening. If the founder leaves while a required in-person step is pending, the setup sequence may slow down.

Because travel and stay rules can be category-specific, do not rely only on memory or old advice. Use the official status route and ask a qualified provider if the result is unclear.

Checking Status After Cancellation

After cancellation, a status check can help confirm whether the previous visa is no longer active. But cancellation also raises questions about grace period, fines, dependent visas and new visa eligibility. Those questions may require more than a simple status screen.

Keep cancellation documents. If you apply for a new visa, transfer sponsor or close a company, cancellation evidence may be needed. For employees, HR should provide clear cancellation records. For founders, company closure or visa transfer should be documented carefully.

Status Check for Bank and Compliance Use

Sometimes the purpose of checking visa status is not travel. It is bank KYC, corporate compliance or document renewal. In that case, the status screenshot may not be enough. The bank or provider may need a visa copy, Emirates ID, passport and proof of address.

Ask the receiving party what they need. A valid status result is useful, but a formal document may still be required.

Evidence to Save After a Successful Check

If the status check confirms the visa is valid, save a screenshot only as a temporary reference. Then download or request the formal visa copy if the matter is important. A screenshot can help internal follow-up, but many banks, schools, employers and official processes need the actual document.

Store the visa copy with passport, Emirates ID, application receipt and renewal date. For companies, add it to the employee or shareholder compliance file. For family sponsors, store it by dependent name.

This turns a one-time status check into a usable document record.

When to Ask for Help

Ask for help if the status does not show after checking the correct authority, if the number is unclear, if the passport was renewed, if the file was submitted by an employer or free zone and no receipt was shared, or if the status conflicts with what a provider says.

Support is more effective when you provide screenshots, passport copy, application receipt, visa copy and the issuing emirate.

Passport Number Alone Is Often Not Enough

Many users search for a passport-only visa status check, but the passport number may be only one field. Depending on the authority and the type of record, the user may also need nationality, date of birth, passport expiry date, UID or UDB number, visa file number, application number or sponsor details. If any of these fields changed after passport renewal, the online result can fail even when the visa record exists.

Passport and laptop used for a UAE visa status check

For Dubai files, check the GDRFA Dubai route first because Dubai entry permits, residence visas and cancellations are tracked through the Dubai immigration channel. For Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah files, ICP is usually the first online route. The issuing emirate matters more than the applicant’s current location.

What to Save After a Successful Status Check

If the status check is being used for travel, banking, employment onboarding or family sponsorship, save more than a screenshot of the result. Keep the date of the check, the passport used, the visa file number or UID if shown, the status wording and the authority channel used. This creates a clean trail if a bank, employer, free zone, airline desk or PRO later asks how the status was confirmed.

For company-sponsored cases, link the result to the staff file together with the passport, Emirates ID, employment contract, medical fitness result and visa copy. For founders, keep it with the Investor Visa and Bank Account Opening documents so KYC requests can be answered quickly.

When the Online Result Should Not Be Trusted Alone

Do not rely on one online result if the person recently renewed a passport, cancelled a visa, changed sponsor, completed medical fitness, travelled after a long absence or moved between employer, free zone and family sponsorship. These are the cases where records can be active in one system and not yet reflected in another.

Inlex can review the immigration evidence pack through PRO Services and map whether the next action belongs with ICP, GDRFA Dubai, an Amer centre, a free zone portal or a medical fitness provider.

How Inlex Partners Can Help

Inlex Partners can help clients identify whether ICP or GDRFA is the correct route, collect the right file numbers, track visa status, coordinate with medical fitness and Emirates ID steps, and resolve confusion around Dubai versus federal files.

This is especially useful for investors, employees, family sponsors and companies managing multiple visa cases.
